The first boss you actually have to beat is General Velgar, and his lair sits at Velgar’s Rise in the Fractured Plains. You need to craft a challenge horn before the fight starts properly. He is what stands between you and the two starting regions, Ghornfell and Brynmoor.

After him come Imaru in Fellhollow (three curse fragments unlock her tower), the Black Knight Titan in Dowdun Reach (he guards the passage into the Umbral Sands), the Kalphite Queen and Fuzan in the Umbral Sands. And finally Kuldra in the Scorned Wilderness raid.

Preparation is less about reflexes and more about armour tier (Power Level), food and poison control - 1.0 reworked healing, so those three decide whether you finish the fight standing.

Worth knowing: the Garou King is not a dragon general. He is a Power Level 5 mini-boss at Highlands Castle who blocks everything behind a tower shield until his stance breaks. And beating him drops the tainted king’s token needed for the Dog Days quest.

Velgar: how to summon him and what he does

Where. Velgar’s Rise in the Fractured Plains. He also rules Ghornfell and Brynmoor in practice. Which means he attacks you in the open world - this is not a fight you opt into.

How the fight unlocks. You need the recipe and ingredients to craft a challenge horn. Jagex’s description of the design involves a dragon’s tooth carved with dragonkin sigils and metal wires arranged into a lattice.

What he throws at you. Out in the world he uses poison breath and meteor barrages on the ground. The poison lines up with Jagex’s own advice for the Bloodblight Swamp, the region his blood corrupted: bring an antipoison. Because being in that area fills the poison bar by itself.

After the fight. He stops ruling Ghornfell and Brynmoor and the route onwards opens. His drop table picked up ascension shards in a post-0.12 update.

What to do before you start

  1. Get your armour to the tier of the region. Damage gates come from the Power Level your armour set provides, not from player skill. When an enemy is two levels above you it shows a skull icon; that is a warning, not decoration.
  2. Bring enough food, and food you can chain-eat. 1.0 changed healing to allow eating in sequence and removed Wardstones. Replacing them with Sanguine Urns around the world that each grant +10 maximum health, permanently. Clear the urns near your base before you pick the fight.
  3. Bring poison control. Poison breath and the Bloodblight Swamp both stack poison, and Jagex recommends antipoison for that region.
  4. Solo works, co-op is safer. A world holds up to 4 players; extra players buy you margin for error rather than replacing gear tiers.

One weapon fact is worth knowing in advance: 1.0 moved the Abyssal Whip to PL7 Masterwork and made Abyssal Demons drop the PL4 Abysmal Whip. So “Power Level of the weapon in your hand” and “armour tier” are two things to look at together. Details: weapons and upgrade paths.

Unlocking the later bosses

  • Imaru: head to Imaru’s Tower in Hope’s Fall, Fellhollow. The entrance is sealed with magic, and three curse fragments break the seal. After a kill you have to collect them again. She only attacks you in the open world if you spend too long soul-rifting.
  • Black Knight Titan: an old Black Knight commander resurrected by the Dreaming Stone, Power Level 6. He blocks the way into the Umbral Sands, so this fight is progress, not side content.
  • Fuzan: finish Icthlarin’s Little Helper first; the quest leads you into Fuzan’s trial. He rules the desert using a lens taken from the Kot’Haar.
  • Kuldra: the five-headed ancient black dragon. You reach her through the Scorned Wilderness raid and its elemental attunement flow. The stage-by-stage route and the final puzzle are on quests and the Scorned Wilderness raid.

What is still unknown

  • Jagex has not published boss health, damage or drop rates in its announcements or the official wiki’s readable text, so this page prints no numbers.
  • “What is Velgar weak to” gets searched constantly, but there is no official elemental-weakness answer, so this page does not guess one.
  • The official wiki’s Velgar strategy page is marked as being rewritten for the 1.0 ascension upgrades and the new combat system. That means pre-1.0 phase-by-phase guides are out of date, and this page sticks to what still holds: location, summon method and attack types.
