RuneScape: Dragonwilds Armour: Tiers, Sets and Hard Leather
The six armour tiers, the three combat-style set lines, what Hard Leather is used for, and the three endgame sets added in 1.0.

Armour is tiered by material: Bronze → Iron → Steel → Mithril → Adamant → Runite.
Each tier carries three set lines: melee, ranged and magic.
The 1.0 endgame sets are Rune Armour for melee, Ancestral Robes for magic and Black Dragonhide for ranged.
Hard Leather is an early crafting material. It is used together with wool thread to make the Leather Armour line.
Tiers and where they come from
| Tier | Main region | Representative gear |
|---|---|---|
| Iron | Starter regions | Your first complete set |
| Steel | Fellhollow | Includes the iconic plumed full helm |
| Mithril | Dowdun Reach | Pairs with Mystic Robes |
| Adamant | Umbral Sands | Also brings Red Dragonhide and Infinity Robes |
| Runite | Scorned Wilderness (1.0) | Rune Armour, Ancestral Robes, Black Dragonhide |
Umbral Sands also holds the long-chase vestiges: Obsidian Armour, the Obsidian Shield and the Fire Cape.
The 1.0 Dragon series (Dragon Full Helm, Dragon Platebody, Dragon Platelegs, Dragon Med Helm, Dragon Shield) comes from repeated raid clears.
Picking between the three set lines
| Style | Early and mid game | Endgame (1.0) |
|---|---|---|
| Melee | Iron → Steel → Mithril → Adamant Armour | Rune Armour |
| Ranged | Leather → Dragonhide (Red) | Black Dragonhide |
| Magic | Mystic Robes → Infinity Robes | Ancestral Robes |
Hard Leather and other intermediate materials
Hard Leather is not finished gear. It is a crafting material.
Combined with Wool Thread, it makes Leather Armour pieces. Its role is early light armour and the base of the ranged line.
If you play ranged, you will go through the leather line early on.
A batch of mid-game intermediates gates progress the same way:
- Black Dragon Hide is processed at the Advanced Tannery.
- Vis Fibers are made at the Advanced Spinning Wheel.
- Vis Cloth is woven at the Loom from Vis Fibers and Draconic Vis Wax.
The order you unlock those stations in directly caps your gear progression.
Power Level: mixing tiers costs you
This is the most important rule when choosing armour.
- Your Power Level comes from the whole set.
- Mixing tiers averages the values and rounds down.
- So one low-tier piece drops the entire set a step.
Practical advice: keep the set on one tier rather than slotting one high-tier item into low-tier gear.
When the skull icon shows up, the piece to replace is usually the lowest one, not the highest.
After 1.0, upgrading a weapon beats replacing your armour
The 1.0 Nightmare Crucible lets you spend upgrade materials to push an existing weapon from a low Power Level to the top tier.
Jagex says this exists so players can walk into the Kuldra fight with the weapon they already like.
That splits gear planning in two:
- Armour: change tier as you change region, because Power Level has to line up across the set.
- Weapons: push the one you handle best to the ceiling instead of starting a new line.
Limits
- Exact defence values and set effects are not fully published. This page does not print a stat table.
- The full Hard Leather recipe chain, piece by piece, lives in the in-game crafting menu and the official wiki.
- “Mixing tiers lowers Power Level” comes from creator testing and in-game values, not an official statement.
